History
In 1981, Fiat's Abarth, along with Lancia, began working on the 037 project in order to build a car that met the requirements of the new rally group B. Since the project was numbered 037, the car was named Lancia Rally 037, became known all over the world with this name.
Lancia 037 design is based on Lancia Montecarlo car. The body was a tubular frame with hinged body panels, many of which were made of Kevlar. Steel subframes in the suspension were used as well. Just like the Lancia Montecarlo, the engine was centrally located but rotated 90 degrees. This gave more space for suspension design. The Lancia 037 was powered by a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine with compressor. The original engine power was 265 hp (198 kW), but with the introduction of the Evolution 1 series, it increased to 300 hp. The final engine version of the Evolution 2 reached 325 hp (242 kW).
With the 037, Lancia won the 1983 World Rally Championship in the manufacturer's category. It was the last four-wheel drive vehicle that won the main trophy in the WRC, and subsequent team cups in the world championship.
