In 1973, Toyne Hesemans won the European Passenger Car Championship in CSL 3.0. Later - together with Dieter Kester he won the Lehmann 24 hours race in the class.
Hesemans and Quester finished second in the 1973 German Touring Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, beaten only by Chris Amon and Hans-Joachim Stuck in another similar BMW 3.0 CSL.
Other BMW 3.0 CSLs won the European Touring Car Championship every year from 1975 to 1979.
3.0 CSL competed in the 1975 IMSA GT Championship. Sam Posey, Brian Redman and Ronnie Peterson have also won races this season.
A later version, the 3.5 CSL, was created for races in Group 5, and BMW won three races in the 1976 World Championship with this model.
